Iwan is a partner in the corporate practice and is head of clean energy and sustainability MENA. Prior to relocating to Dubai in April 2018, Iwan worked for Eversheds Sutherland for 12 years in the UK. His practice focuses on energy projects and clean energy projects in particular. Iwan’s clients range from utilities, private equity and infrastructure funds to banks and developers. He has advised on a wide variety of transactions including corporate reorganisations, joint ventures, equity and debt fund raising, mergers and public takeovers. Iwan has been very active advising clients on investments and developments of solar PV projects. He advised Greencoat Capital LLP on their acquisition of a 142MW of operating solar PV projects from Canadian Solar Inc. which was the largest solar M&A transaction in Europe in 2018 at the time. Iwan also acts for a number of developers on their solar PV projects including Suncredit, INRG, Solargise, China Sunergy. Iwan has advised on a large number of on shore wind transactions and acts for a number of on shore wind developers such as Pennant Walters, InfraRed, West Coast Energy, EDF, RWE and Blackrock. In particular, he advised EDF Energy Renewables on its disposal of a majority stake in five operating wind farms to Greencoat UK Wind plc for £98m. Iwan also advised the Green Investment Bank and Blackrock on their 194MW Lynn and Inner Dowsing off shore wind project from Centrica/EIG for £423m. Iwan lead the team advising on a number of biomass projects including advising Glennmont Capital on its acquisition and financing of the Sleaford biomass plant from ECO2. He also advised the shareholders of Snetterton biomass project on the sale of its project to Copenhagen Investment Partners. Recently Iwan advised a bidder on the proposed acquisition of Neart na Gaoithe 450MW off shore wind farm and also advised clients in relation to the Round 2 and Round 3 offshore wind farm projects. He advised Shell on their acquisition of First Utility who are a leading independent European energy supplier supplying over 800,000 customers at the time of acquisition. Legal 500 2018 has named Iwan as a “Leading Individual” for project finance and PFI, and corporate and commercial. Iwan was named by Legal Week as one of the up and coming M&A partners in January 2016. He has been listed as a notable practitioner by Chambers & Partners saying that he is “strong on the corporate side of energy work”. Iwan is the only lawyer listed by Chambers & Partners for 2016 as up and coming for energy and national resources work.
